Miami Design District Rises

May 11, 2015

Transformed into one of the most cutting edge neighborhoods for high-end fashion, art and design, the Miami Design District is growing exponentially with a third phase beginning in 2016. Within the more recent years there has been a large amount of development to the area making it one of the sought after locations for designers and retail stores to plant their roots. New designers and brands that are coming to Design District include Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Hublot, IWC, Loewe, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, Panerai, Parmigiani, Piaget, Tag Heuer, Tiffany & Co., Tom Ford, Tod’s, Vacheron, Valentino, Van Cleef & Arpels, Ermenegildo Zegna and Zenith, as well as others.

Palm Court, seen above, is located at the southern end of the Paseo Ponti pedestrian walkway and is one of the many new additions to the district. The courtyard features a mixed-use two story retail building designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto as well as Buckminster Fuller’s 24-foot Fly’s Eye Dome instillation.

Also included at the southern end of Paseo Ponti walkway is a 5,000 square foot event space designed by Aranda/Lasch. The space sits atop the nearby buildings providing substantial views of the surrounding area and with retractable doors making the space a one of a kind outdoor venue.

At the northern end of Paseo Ponti, another courtyard named Paradise Plaza, has been recently announced as a part of the areas next phase and is expected to be finished in 2017. The new phase is planned to include 60 new retail stores and restaurants as well as two anchor buildings one designed by Jonston Marklee and the other by NADAA. A new parking garage dubbed Museum Garage (as seen above) is also part of the new phase, designed by Keenan/Riley, Work Architecture Company, Clavel Arquitectos, Nicolas Buffe, and Jürgen Mayer-Hermann and will be located on 41st street.

In the center of the district between 39th street and 40th street two additional retail buildings are being constructed. The JBL building on the corner of N.E 40th Street is designed by architects K/R, where the retail space just south is designed by Aranda/Lasch and will have four retail tenants including Tom Ford.

An additional parking garage has been constructed on the western edge of the design district on 38th street named the City View Garage. The City View building covers two street blocks and has the western face of the building designed by Leong Leong with the overall building being designed by Iwamoto Scott. City View façade contains a hidden office block, elevator lobby, exterior stairs and the City View Garage. The design of the building forms a strategic mural that conceals the parking structure and provides natural ventilation.

A neighborhood that has undergone a large transformation and is taking claim to latest design and fashion trends, the Miami Design District is on the rise. Although the area has looked much like a construction zone, recently one can see the large charges throughout the area take shape as well as all of the projected changes to come.
